Velkommen til Norway

Welcome to Norway!

It’s been a great couple of days here in Norway.  When we arrived, Snorre Naess was there to greet us.  We were welcomed into his home  in Harestua for the night, toured his kennel, and saw his dogs. Snorre Naess is not only a dog musher but he also builds very popular dogsleds in Norway. They are quite an innovative design and a testament  to Norwegian ingenuity. We also had the opportunity to watch some of the dogs from his kennel go out for a training run.

And who is that running behind the 4-wheeler?  It’s Tina, one of Snorre’s English Mastiffs.

The bigger Mastiff is Coma…she weighs about 200 lbs.  These girls were great!  Gentle giants!

We took a long walk  and got to see some great country.  Sheep run amuck in the roads and in the woods, and there’s water everywhere!

We noticed a lot of flora in common with Alaska, including fireweed, clover, rosehips, and yarrow, just to name a few.  But I thought this was an interesting street sign…

IMGP1386 It looks like a creepy stalker on the cross walk, but I guess it’s just the old-school cross walk sign, all of which the cities are working to replace with more PC, gender neutral signs resembling the ones we see in the US. ;)

At the grocery store, one of the most interesting things we found was kaviar in a toothpaste tube!

Snorre invited a bunch of mushers over for a pow wow and  BBQ in his teepee.  We had a lot of fun and met some great people.

And no BBQ would be complete without a little target practice! :)

More to come.  Stay tuned!!

I am SO envious of you. I have always wanted to go to Scandinavia. And to get to go and be around mushers there? Too cool. Hope you have a great time.
